This past May Mike Christner, Statesmen softball coach, was inducted into the Iowa Men’s Fastpitch Hall of Fame. Coach Christner is currently in his 15th season as head softball coach at William Penn University and he is the winningest coach in the program’s history. However his success reaches far beyond the program here at Penn.
Christner played men’s fastpitch for over twenty years on teams all around the state of Iowa. He had the opportunity to travel far and wide-even across international boundaries into Canada- for competition. He collected numerous accolades over his career such as being ranked in the top ten of batting average in the Major Open League and placing ninth in the World Tournament with one of his teams.
The Iowa Men’s Fastpitch Hall of Fame inducted five men in the spring of 2015, in 2014 and 2013 there were no new inductees. The HOF recognizes players who performed in outstanding ways during their career or non-players who helped substantially establish softball as a popular sport. It is an incredible accomplishment to even be nominated for the Hall of Fame, let alone inducted. Coach Christner had a hugely successful career as a player and he continues to show his love for the game by making William Penn softball a force to be reckoned with every season.
