Statesmen Baseball looks to improve from previous season

By Damien McKinzie

Looking to improve upon a 24-23 record set a year ago the Statesmen baseball team is bringing back several key players this season. Senior pitcher DJ Milam, senior third baseman Colton Johnson, and senior catcher Dominik Sawyer will all serve integral leadership positions for the squad.

New talents, such as pitcher/outfield junior transfer Felipe Hernandez and shortstop junior transfer Julian Villegas will also work to aid the team. After the loss of key players like second baseman Anthony York and infielder Robert Phiakeo, the Statesmen are currently projected to finish low in their conference. However, the Statesmen feel that with this year’s team, heart and mindset there is no reason why they should not be able to make it into the Heart tournament this May!

Redshirt freshman, Nick Worcester spoke about goals, “I’m looking forward to getting in the bus to travel to the National Championship Series at the end of the year!”

While doing the usual things to prepare for the season such as fielding ground balls, taking batting practice, pitchers throwing bullpens and the team taking a rare opportunity to scrimmage outside on the football field, the squad looks full of promise and have no reason why they can’t easily fulfill their season goals!

The Statesmen baseball team make their season debut February 11 against McPherson in McPherson, Kansas and they host their home opener March 21 against Hannibal-LaGrange.
